Fitted Alcove Cupboards High Wycombe & Marlow
We are the cabinet maker of Choice for beautiful Alcove Cabinets
High Wycombe has a long furniture‑making history. Marlow sits on the river with elegant homes. Both towns have one thing in common – alcoves that go unused.
A recess either side of a chimney breast offers space. But off‑the‑shelf furniture rarely fits. It leaves gaps. It looks awkward. We are Built in Solutions. We make bespoke fitted cupboards for alcoves. Each piece is measured to your recess and built in our workshop.
The result is neat, practical, and quiet. We work across High Wycombe – from Hazlemere to Downley – and across Marlow – from the town centre to Bisham and Bourne End. Our service is simple. We visit, measure, quote, then make and fit.

Alcoves in High Wycombe
High Wycombe’s homes range from Victorian terraces to modern estates. Each alcove is different.
We have fitted cupboards in Castlefield, Totteridge, and Penn. The most popular design is a media alcove – cupboards either side of the fireplace with a shelf for the television. Wires and devices stay hidden.
We also create home office areas for those working from home. The key is a perfect fit. We scribe every panel to the wall, so there are no gaps.
Alcoves in Marlow
Marlow is known for its riverside and its handsome period homes. Chimney breasts are common. The twin alcoves either side are perfect for storage.
We recently built a pair of cupboards in Bisham – one side for the television, the other for books and a drinks cabinet.
Another project in Little Marlow used the alcoves for a wardrobe and a dressing table. Whatever you need, we can design it. Soft‑close hinges, adjustable shelves, and a durable painted finish come as standard.

Fitted Victorian style Alcove Cupboards
Installed in a large period Victorian property in High Wycombe with an impressive reception room., this project features alcove cupboards with integrated shelving above. The room itself has high ceilings and plenty of original period character.
For this stunning pair of alcove units, we incorporated complementary design details including inset beaded doors, fluted columns, and other classic ornate touches.
Notice how seamlessly they blend into the space – exactly as though they’ve been part of the home from the very beginning.

The nature of Alcoves Spaces in Wycombe and Marlow homes
Unlike newly built properties that stick to a standard design template, the majority of homes across High Wycombe and Marlow were built in earlier periods – think 1930s semi‑detached houses, post‑modern styles from the 1980s, plus Victorian and Edwardian properties, not to forget to mention Georgian town houses within walking distance of the high street in Marlow, many Grade II listed.
High Wycombe town centre retains original Georgian architecture Many of these were put up by different construction teams.
Homes built from the 1950s through to today – including modern townhouses and apartments – are equally well suited to custom alcove storage, particularly in open‑plan layouts that naturally produce recessed wall nooks.
From closing off an awkward chimney recess inside a character cottage to fitting tidy shelving into a contemporary flat, bespoke alcove units make smart use of wasted space while adding charm to any property.

That figure doesn’t even include the early years when we worked on our own before forming Built in Solutions. Back then, our workspace was a cramped, dimly lit shed – ramshackle would be a fair description.

For more than two decades – 22 years, to be exact – we have been creating exceptional built‑in and fitted furniture for High Wycombe and Marlow along with serving as bespoke alcove cabinet makers.
Materials and finishes
The aim is a cupboard that looks original to the house – calm, quiet, and useful.
With a very wide selection of materials to work with nowadays, its sometimes hard to make a choice. However we mainly work with Birch Ply, MDF, and solid woods.
We offer a Painted Finish in any colour and on any range of paint, either spray painted for the contemporary feel, or traditionally hand painted so its not out of place in any period property.

Why a Fitted Alcove Cupboards Solution is preferred In High Wycombe & Marlow
As most homes vary from their neighbouring houses room by room, Here’s what that means in practice: even when you’re looking at a terrace of houses that appear identical on the outside, the internal wall dimensions and room layouts will nearly always vary.
A conventional, factory‑produced, ready‑made cupboard system with fixed measurements just won’t deliver a proper fit.
That’s precisely why a bespoke, built to measure alcove cupboard is realistically your only good option. So if you’re searching for media wall alcove design ideas, custom TV units for recessed spaces, or tailored built in storage solutions, do get in touch.
We’d be delighted to demonstrate how we can craft the ideal fitted alcove cupboard for your home in High Wycombe, Marlow, or the nearby villages.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our Built in Furniture and the Process
Are you a local company?
Yes we are!
We are just down the road on the sleepy Oxfordshire border. So that definitely makes us your local cabinet maker.
Find us on Google Maps here
Do you truly make made to measure furniture ?
Yes, we make custom made to measure furniture that is designed to fit the space.
We do not use the common used method of making ‘bespoke’ furniture by stacking standard sized cabinets together to best fill the space, then filling the gaps up with filler panels.
How is your Furniture made ?
Full Carcass construction
All our furniture is made fully lined, meaning you will get a fully enclosed cabinet/cupboard
All joined sections are applied with a front framework, covering any join or part.
A cheaper method that is used by others is to attach battens to the walls. The ceiling and floor would be an integral part of the construction and would be seen when viewed inside, its essentially a cheaper way to make built-in furniture.
These are often made by on the job Carpenters, and some of the larger companies.
What finishes do you offer ?
We can paint in any colour you like, and use paint from your preferred paint company, or alternatively in a extra hard lacquer.
Painting is carried out in our workshop before your furniture is installed in your home, meaning your furniture will be ready sooner with less disruption.
Do you work off Site or on Site
We construct your furniture in our fully equipped workshop, ready for installation.
This means we can control the quality of the manufacturing process using our dedicated machines.
Resulting in minimal disruption to you and your home.
Our fitting process takes a day or two at most , and your furniture is ready to use the day we finish.
Compare that to a company that works onsite. They will usually take over a week, cutting up all that wood in your lovely home, not forgetting how ever long it takes to painting it.
Do you Provide Free Quotes ?
Yes we provide free Quotes.
However for your initial enquiry, please complete our enquiry form or send us a email with a brief and approximate measurements.
We will use this to provide you with the likely cost of your furniture.
If you are happy with our costings, we will be happy to arrange a home visit.
Is your Furniture is built to last ?
By selecting sound and high quality materials, and the appropriate paint finish, we ensure that the furniture we make for you will last a lifetime.
With extensive use of double panel construction, and Front Frame Face together with attention to detail means we create a beautiful long lasting product.
Our painted Furniture can be repainted if you fancy a colour change, or if requires refreshing in many many years to come.
What about Customer Service ?
How long is the process ?
Our process usually takes around 8 weeks from your order.
Fitted Furniture or Built in Furniture - Whats the Difference?
Fitted Furniture vs Built in Furniture
Honestly, there’s no official rulebook – There’s essentially no difference today, it’s just how UK joiners have talked for years.
That said, traditionally the term “built-in” was used when furniture had a framework attached directly to the walls, with doors fixed on.
“Fitted” was more for wall-to-wall storage. But in modern workshops across Oxfordshire and beyond, the two have merged.
Most customers use them interchangeably, and so do we. What matters isn’t the label – it’s precise measuring, quality materials, and a design that will make the space look lovely.
