A Shaker wardrobe uses a recessed flat panel door set within a rectangular frame. It is one of the oldest door profiles still in production and works in almost any room — neither too traditional nor too contemporary. The main variable is rail width, which determines how the door reads visually.

What rail width should I choose?

We work in 50mm, 60mm, 70mm, 80mm, and 100mm rails. Narrower rails look lighter and more contemporary. Wider rails carry more visual weight and read as more traditional. A 50mm rail suits modern extensions and new builds. A 100mm rail looks right in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom alongside deep skirting boards and original cornicing.

What is beading on a Shaker door?

Classic beading is a small applied moulding fixed around the inside edge of the recessed panel. It adds period character to a wider-rail Shaker door without going as far as a full Victorian raised panel profile. It is a common choice in period properties where clients want something that feels in keeping without being heavily ornate.

Can Shaker wardrobes work in a modern home?

Yes — it is one of the most specified styles in new builds and recently renovated properties. A 50mm rail in a light neutral keeps the profile clean and contemporary without committing to a fully handleless fit. The recessed panel adds just enough depth and shadow to prevent the doors reading as flat slabs.

What colours work well for Shaker wardrobes?

The recessed panel catches light differently from the frame, which means colour reads with more depth on a Shaker door than on a flat contemporary one. Popular choices are Farrow & Ball Purbeck Stone, Elephant's Breath, Hague Blue, Railings, and Mole's Breath. From Little Greene, French Grey and Bone both work well. Yes. Every piece is built from scratch for the exact dimensions of your room. We do not stack standard-sized cabinets together to fill a space and disguise the gaps with filler panels — every single measurement is taken from your room and every panel is cut specifically for it.

How is your furniture made?

All our furniture is full carcass construction — every unit is built as a complete structural box with back panel, base, top, and sides before the doors are fitted. We manufacture everything in our Oxfordshire workshop, not on site in your home, giving us complete control over quality and finish.

What finishes do you offer?

We finish all our furniture in a hard-wearing workshop lacquer applied by spray in a controlled environment. finished in your choice of colour — Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Dulux, Fired Earth, or any other paint brand — including popular choices like Elephant’s Breath, Purbeck Stone, and Ammonite. For clients who prefer it, we can also apply those manufacturers’ own paints directly.

Do you work off site or on site?

We manufacture everything in our fully equipped workshop and install it in your home in a single day in most cases. Compare that to on-site building, which typically takes over a week, involves cutting and painting in your home, and rarely achieves as clean a finish as a controlled workshop environment.

Is your furniture built to last?

Yes. Full carcass construction, premium engineered board, and a hard-wearing workshop lacquer finish means our furniture is built to the same structural standard as high-end kitchen cabinetry. Our painted furniture can also be repainted years down the line if you want to refresh the colour.

How long does the process take?

From initial enquiry to installation typically takes around eight weeks, covering the home visit, design drawing, workshop manufacture, and installation scheduling. Installation itself takes one to two days in most cases.
