Remote working in Oxford
Oxford has one of the highest concentrations of home-based workers in the UK — researchers, academics, tech professionals from the Science Vale corridor, and the large number of people who relocated to Oxfordshire during and after the pandemic for more space.
For many Oxford homeowners, a properly designed home office isn’t a luxury — it’s a professional necessity. A dedicated fitted workspace separated from the rest of the home makes a genuine difference to focus, productivity, and the ability to switch off at the end of the day.

Recent work completed in Oxford - Fitted Home Office, Victorian Terrace, North Oxford
Basement rooms in North Oxford’s Victorian terraces are full of potential — good ceiling height, a quiet separation from the rest of the house, and often a generous footprint. The challenge is always light. This particular room had a single window wall, and the brief was clear: maximum bookcase storage, a clean uncluttered desk area, and everything done to keep the room feeling as bright and open as possible.
The result is a room that feels like a proper scholar’s study — calm, ordered, and full of books — rather than a basement storage room with a desk squeezed in.

Basement Fitted home office in Victorian Home in North Oxford
The solution was to keep the two walls entirely separate in purpose. The window wall was left completely clear — no shelving, no cabinets, nothing to interrupt the light coming in or crowd the desk positioned in front of it. A clean, wide fitted desk runs the full width of that wall, giving a generous workspace that feels open and unencumbered. Exactly what a serious reader and researcher needs.
The opposite wall is where the storage lives. Floor-to-ceiling fitted bookcases running the full length of the room, designed specifically to house a large book collection — properly proportioned shelves at the right depths and heights for books rather than the shallow decorative shelving that looks good in photos but can’t actually hold much. Deep enough for large format books, flexible enough to accommodate different heights throughout.
The entire fit-out was painted in white throughout — carcasses, doors, shelving, every surface. In a basement room with limited natural light, white does more work than any lighting solution. It bounces what light there is around the room and stops the furniture from visually closing the space in.

Many houses in Oxford have a small room in their homes, basically a box room home office (a big request is for fitted home office for small spaces, or custom home office for spare room) especially in 1930’s semi-detached homes that are distributed all around Oxford, particularly in the New Headington and Marston areas.
Fitted home office for small spaces and awkward corners
However the rest of Oxford also have their fair share, including most villages that were enlarged during that time. Smaller Victorian houses located in Jericho and Cowley were workers homes, and are now in vogue, yet with their small foot print, many have been extended for additional living space. We are often asked for office fitted home office for awkward corners and Home office storage solutions for clutter to make the most of these spaces. We can make these with a fitted desk with drawers and cabinets and with a L-shaped fitted home office desk, fitted desk with drawers and cabinets.

With LED lighting that can almost be added to any space, we can make the smallest and darkest spaces come to light, with the correct use of colours and materials, we can cater for a bright or a moody look. Made to Fit Your Room, Not the Other Way Round
In contrast to modern homes, which are designed on computers and mass-produced from identical templates, most houses in Oxford are older—1930s semis, 1980s postmodernist styles, and even earlier Victorian and Edwardian homes. Georgian houses also line the streets opposite the Oxford Playhouse, and these were built by different work gangs. Meaning each on is as unique as the next.

What Our Clients Say
Frequently Asked Questions — Fitted Home Office Furniture in Oxford
Are you a local Oxford company making fitted home offices?
Yes. We are based in Long Hanborough, just outside Oxford, and have been making fitted home office furniture for Oxford homes for over 20 years. We work across Jericho, Summertown, North Oxford, Headington, Cowley, Marston, and the wider Oxfordshire area.
How much does a fitted home office cost in Oxford?
A bespoke fitted home office in Oxford typically costs between £2,500 and £6,000, depending on size, materials, and features. A simple alcove desk with overhead cabinets starts from around £2,000 to £3,000, while a full room fit-out with floor-to-ceiling joinery can exceed £6,000.
Are fitted desks better than freestanding desks for small Oxford homes?
Yes. For small Oxford terraced houses, common in Jericho, Cowley Road, and Summertown, fitted desks maximise awkward alcoves and sloping ceilings. Unlike freestanding desks, they use every inch of wall space, hide unsightly radiators or uneven walls, and can include custom under-stair storage. They also add property value.
What depth should a fitted desk be for a spare room in Oxford?
The standard comfortable depth is 600mm for a monitor and keyboard. For tighter Oxford box rooms in Headington or Marston, 450mm works with a wall-mounted screen. Deeper desks at 750mm suit creative work such as drawing or drafting. We always measure your available depth precisely before designing anything.
Can you fit a home office into a small bedroom in Oxford?
Yes. A bespoke solution makes the best use of a small bedroom, maximising storage without the compromises of standard sized cabinets. We make every cabinet from scratch, meaning we are not limited to certain sizes or designs.
Can you fit a home office into an under-stairs cupboard in Oxford?
Yes. Many Oxford Victorian and Edwardian homes have large under-stairs voids. A fitted desk as shallow as 400mm deep can work with a fold-down or sliding work surface, LED lighting, and a pull-out computer tower. Typical cost for a basic under-stairs fit-out is £2,500 to £4,500.
How long does the process take for a fitted home office in Oxford?
From initial enquiry to installation typically takes six to eight weeks. This covers the home visit, design drawing, workshop manufacture, and installation of one to three days depending on the size of the project.
