Deeper alcoves – a hidden opportunity
Many Maidenhead properties, especially those built in the 1930s or later, have alcoves that are 60 to 80 centimetres deep.
That is plenty of room for a hanging rail, double rows of shelves, or deep drawers. We have built alcove wardrobes in Cookham that gave the family the equivalent of a two‑metre wardrobe without losing floor space.
We have also created pantry cupboards in kitchen alcoves – perfect for tins, jars, and dry goods. Do not let that depth go to waste.

The nature of Alcoves Spaces in Maidenhead homes
Instantly add character to your Maidenhead living room by having custom made alcove cupboards fitted either side of your fireplace. In many period properties around the town centre and along routes like Cookham Road, the original chimney breast creates two symmetrical recesses just waiting to be used.
Maidenhead homes – in Cox Green, Furze Platt, Cookham, and the town centre – often have deeper alcoves than you might expect. That is good news. It means more storage space. But only if you use it properly.
A standard unit from a shop will not fill the depth. You will lose the space behind. We at Built in Solutions. We make fitted cupboards that use every centimetre of your alcove. We measure, design, build, and fit – all in‑house. The result is storage that feels calm and intentional. No wasted space. No awkward gaps. Just a cupboard that belongs.
Alternatively, if you have an awkward space above a curtain rail or an empty alcove beside a bay window, an alcove bookcase could be just the thing.
Built in cupboards in alcoves make a fantastic addition to your home and create versatile living room storage that makes your living room look great and provides a practical place for everything.
Create even more Storage
Create even more storage space by adding shelves in alcoves where you can have a place for photos of cherished ones, or just a display space that reflects your personality.
An alcove bookcase with adjustable shelves creates flexible storage to hold books, display a favourite ornament, or house a growing media collection – ideal for family homes in Furze Platt and Cox Green where living spaces need to work hard.
Made to measure, they will give you an amazing amount of storage that is functional, looks great and will certainly enhance your home.
Designing the perfect alcove cupboard for your Maidenhead living room is straightforward with a little bit of local know‑how, and we are positive you will be immensely pleased with the final product.

Serving Maidenhead for over 20 Years
We’ve spent over twenty years – 22 to be precise – designing and making beautiful built‑in furniture, fitted joinery, and bespoke alcove cabinetry for properties right across Maidenhead, Taplow and the surrounding area.
That figure doesn’t even include the early years when we worked on our own before forming Built in Solutions. Back then, our workspace was a cramped, dimly lit shed – ramshackle would be a fair description.
Now, things have changed completely. These days, our home is a large, modern workshop packed with up‑to‑date equipment. It allows us to produce the highest quality custom furniture for your home.
For more than two decades – 22 years, to be exact – we have been creating exceptional built‑in and fitted furniture for Maidenhead along with serving as bespoke alcove cabinet makers.
Materials and finishes
We use birch ply, MDF for painted finishes, or solid Oak.
Doors have soft‑close hinges as standard. You choose the handles.
We can paint in any Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or Dulux colour. If you prefer natural wood, we offer clear lacquered Oak. We can also match existing skirting boards. The goal is a cupboard that looks like it has always been part of your home.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our Built in Furniture and the Process
Are you a local company?
Yes we are!
We are just down the road on the sleepy Oxfordshire border. So that definitely makes us your local cabinet maker.
Find us on Google Maps here
Do you truly make made to measure furniture ?
Yes, we make custom made to measure furniture that is designed to fit the space.
We do not use the common used method of making ‘bespoke’ furniture by stacking standard sized cabinets together to best fill the space, then filling the gaps up with filler panels.
How is your Furniture made ?
Full Carcass construction
All our furniture is made fully lined, meaning you will get a fully enclosed cabinet/cupboard
All joined sections are applied with a front framework, covering any join or part.
A cheaper method that is used by others is to attach battens to the walls. The ceiling and floor would be an integral part of the construction and would be seen when viewed inside, its essentially a cheaper way to make built-in furniture.
These are often made by on the job Carpenters, and some of the larger companies.
What finishes do you offer ?
We can paint in any colour you like, and use paint from your preferred paint company, or alternatively in a extra hard lacquer.
Painting is carried out in our workshop before your furniture is installed in your home, meaning your furniture will be ready sooner with less disruption.
Do you work off Site or on Site
We construct your furniture in our fully equipped workshop, ready for installation.
This means we can control the quality of the manufacturing process using our dedicated machines.
Resulting in minimal disruption to you and your home.
Our fitting process takes a day or two at most , and your furniture is ready to use the day we finish.
Compare that to a company that works onsite. They will usually take over a week, cutting up all that wood in your lovely home, not forgetting how ever long it takes to painting it.
Do you Provide Free Quotes ?
Yes we provide free Quotes.
However for your initial enquiry, please complete our enquiry form or send us a email with a brief and approximate measurements.
We will use this to provide you with the likely cost of your furniture.
If you are happy with our costings, we will be happy to arrange a home visit.
Is your Furniture is built to last ?
By selecting sound and high quality materials, and the appropriate paint finish, we ensure that the furniture we make for you will last a lifetime.
With extensive use of double panel construction, and Front Frame Face together with attention to detail means we create a beautiful long lasting product.
Our painted Furniture can be repainted if you fancy a colour change, or if requires refreshing in many many years to come.
What about Customer Service ?
How long is the process ?
Our process usually takes around 8 weeks from your order.
Fitted Furniture or Built in Furniture - Whats the Difference?
Fitted Furniture vs Built in Furniture
Honestly, there’s no official rulebook – There’s essentially no difference today, it’s just how UK joiners have talked for years.
That said, traditionally the term “built-in” was used when furniture had a framework attached directly to the walls, with doors fixed on.
“Fitted” was more for wall-to-wall storage. But in modern workshops across Oxfordshire and beyond, the two have merged.
Most customers use them interchangeably, and so do we. What matters isn’t the label – it’s precise measuring, quality materials, and a design that will make the space look lovely.
