What Makes a Shaker Wardrobe?
A Shaker door is built from two simple parts: a flat center panel surrounded by a frame of horizontal and vertical pieces. If you want a clean, modern look, a narrower frame works best. If you prefer a more traditional or classic style, a wider frame gives the doors a solid, substantial feel.
We use door frame widths anywhere from 50mm to 100mm, depending on how big the doors are. A slimmer 50mm frame works really well in a modern or recently renovated home. On the other hand, chunkier 80mm or 100mm frames are perfect for Victorian or Edwardian houses, where you need a more solid, substantial look to match the period of the building.
Because Shaker doors are so simple, they look great in almost any paint colour. They’re the perfect choice if you want a specific Farrow & Ball or Little Greene shade to stand out cleanly and evenly across the whole wardrobe.

Shaker wardrobes work brilliantly in Victorian and Edwardian homes. Because the doors have such clean proportions, they blend right in with the room’s original features instead of fighting them for attention.
If you’re fitting wardrobes into the alcoves on either side of a fireplace, using a wider 80mm or 100mm frame on the doors gives the furniture enough substance to balance out the size of the chimney breast. Adding a simple bead detail around the inside edge is a great way to introduce some classic character without going quite as heavy as a full Victorian style.
If you have a chimney breast sitting right in the middle of your wall, we can design the wardrobe to bridge right across it. We build deep cupboards in the alcoves and a shallower section directly over the brickwork. This keeps the entire front of the wardrobe completely flush, making the chimney breast disappear entirely behind a seamless row of doors.

All our painted Shaker wardrobes are finished in a hard-wearing workshop lacquer in any colour. The clean flat panel and simple frame show the lacquer finish evenly — making Shaker the style where paint colour has the most visual impact.

For clients who prefer it, we can also apply Farrow and Ball or Little Greene’s own paint products directly rather than our standard lacquer.
